New Orleans

The Junior High history teacher gave me their old pull-down world map. Now that means I can show the class some great stuff about music.

After all, music comes from some time and place and it helps to see and hear it.

One of the most interesting lessons has to do with the influence of the culture originating from New Orleans.

Pulling down the map we would find Arcadia. A brief discussion of the French & Indian War (1754–1763) and the forced relocation of the French population to New Orleans wold follow. Explaining colonialism is pretty easy no matter what age.

Discussing the number of Africans abducted and shipped to America and the subject of slavery in general always caused jaws to drop.

Add the population influx from the Caribbean and Cuba and students get an idea of the cultural gumbo that brewed there.

The influence of jazz upon our culture is paramount. To ignore the reality of it's origins would be a disservice to any student.

Here's a playlist of my most favorite songs out of New Orleans.
