After all, music comes from some time and place and it helps to see and hear it.

Pulling down the map we would find Arcadia. A brief discussion of the French & Indian War (1754–1763) and the forced relocation of the French population to New Orleans wold follow. Explaining colonialism is pretty easy no matter what age.
Discussing the number of Africans abducted and shipped to America and the subject of slavery in general always caused jaws to drop.
Add the population influx from the Caribbean and Cuba and students get an idea of the cultural gumbo that brewed there.

The influence of jazz upon our culture is paramount. To ignore the reality of it's origins would be a disservice to any student.
